What would you like to see in gOS 3.0?

As we prepare to update to Ubuntu 8.04 ourselves, we’d like to ask our friends, i.e. you, from the Linux and Web communities what you’d like to see…

…what’s in your ideal gOS?

but, don’t limit yourself to Rocket or Space. We will see another breakthrough from you…

Wubi is a good idea. I think gOS will probably be one of the better ways to get Windows people interested in Linux anyways.

I currently run Ubuntu 8.04 with AWN. So the question is what can gOS 3.0 do for me and tempt me to come over to you?

Beautiful Interface
gOS is beautiful. gOS 3.0 I am sure will also be. I originally loaded the E17 version because your use of iTask NG was outstanding and gave me a lovely interface on my older PC. If you are staying with Gnome and AWN then I would like you to give me a straight ‘out of the DVD’ multi-option interface. Lots of nice ‘theme packs’.

Workhorse
I would like the distro to be a general workhorse rather than a Facebook special. I’d like you to cherry pick the coolest tools too. Favourite music player that you use? put it in! Bespoke AWN applets?

Make it easy for us to show you off? Desktop video recording? HowTo to get them up on youtube?

Ubuntu linked
You’re doing this already. Make sure that we can update and upgrade the Ubuntu base and still keep our gOSness.

Documentation
Oh yes. Perhaps as a minimum something built in that runs through what makes gOS unique. Guides and walk throughs on how to do cool things? HTML would do.

Just some quick thoughts and best wishes.

Do up a light-weight version that runs great on lower end machines while still maintaining a great user experience and have a high-end version. I’m currently running gOS 2.0 E off an 8GB usb stick and it boots up faster than windows ever could. I haven’t tried gOS Space yet, mostly because I really don’t like myspace, but it looks great just the same! Keep up the great work guys!

This is a great OS, i would like to see the following:
1.) Make it work with the bios issue on older systems, I cant get a Intel810 P3 to boot or load, but the other Ubuntu distros will boot. I have issues with all of them with the Intel 810 video, driver doesnt work right and cannot detect correctly.
2.) Nvidia & ATI latest drivers for gaming
3.) WINE Integration to load windows apps and games!!
4.) Pretty Graphical Desktop, a combo of space and rocket, like the OSX feel and 3D coolness.
5.) Admin Tools
6.) The ability to run VMWare server and Xen easily for running Virtual operating systems
7.)Open Office Standard & Firefox Standard
8.)Windows Networking – Easy tool to join it to windows Active Directory (Samba Integration)
9.)Games – Add cool Flash Games!
10.) Need a best of bread Media Player and Internet Audio Streaming & CD/DVD burning software.
11.)Wireless working easily with all major wireless chipsets, Scanner and Easy connection ability with WEP, WPA, WPA2, LEAP, RADIUS support.
12.) Keep it pretty with lots of great backgrounds and themes available, Video Game screen saver would be cool!
13.) Would love to see a server version also, especially to replace Microsofts and OSX server small business server line
14.) May need a DVD version for all the new features
15.) USB stick version or creator
16.) Antivirus software built in or easily downloaded and install easily
17.) Keep it as intuitive and easy to use as possible!
18.) Get it to 8.04 quick! Add more and more please…. lol

Sorry guys just wanted to through out a ton of stuff that would make this the best OS ever!!

Thanks for the awesome work!!

Hi, users :)

Well, I am using 10 years Windows, but last moths were REALLY hard. I reinstal win several times during last 3 months and it this system makes me sick. For example, today I have to uninstal Service pack 3 for xp to uninstall other programs. Of course the uninstalation of service pack go wrong …

But this is of course toppic about new features in gos, right ? : )
During reinstalation I try several times instal gos. Yes instalation si simple, but till the point where the user choose place, where to install gos. I am total dummy in linux and other coding stuff, so I was really afraid if linux will cooperate with windows participation. And if yes, if it will be passible to run both systems ? I have lot of work on my win disk so it would be really pleasure to dont bother with such things, as bad cooperation of linux and win disk participations.

(I mean this ntfs, fat32)

Here’s what I’d like to see…

Reorganize the “menu” so it is easier to use. Currently the gOS menu is much more disorganized compared to the typical gnome pull down menu, ie, applications, etc…

Add a default program that allows the user to make a remaster on CD or usb.

Add selinux as a default program.

Reduce the iso to fit on a CD.

Promote a community forum where users can go to discuss gOS technical problems. etc…

Eliminate any association with “google”. Unfortunately, many people new to gOS think that the “g” stands for google.

What I would like to see is a more student/teacher version out there so that it could be used in schools and in other places.
Right now I am working on a project to get a new computer lab up and running for my high school by using old or new cmputers coming in from donations and updating them by using os that are approved by the school board. When I should them this operating system gos they freaked out because of the youtube, myspace, etc. . . (its all blocked at the school) So if you made a more teacher/ student operating system it would be great.
The only thing i could think that can be uprade would be that we could drag and drop our own icons onto the launch pad panel.

If you would like me to join the project please contact me at pusherlumber44@gmail.com

I’ve just downloaded gOS Space. And to my surprise The Awn Dock is no where near as good as the Enlightenment System. I’ve got to admit that I’m not much of a GNOME or KDE Fan. I prefer Enlightenment. Stick with E17 it’s really good. I’m Finding gOS Space a little to Mac ish. Anyone read my gOS blog (Which urgently needs updating.) You’ll see what I mean.

So far, what I’ve noticed about the new gOS is that it’s just Ubuntu with a (If i do say so, Beautiful) theme on, (It actually looks better then Vista and Mac OS X) and a few extra menu congiurations and a fancy splash.

Here’s what I’d like to see in 3.0,

1. a Spacey name like gOS Saturn or Jupiter (Sorry Neptune’s already been taken by Microsoft)
2. Keep the System preferences thing in the gOS Main Menu thing. It’s so much better then anything I’ve used.
3. Open Office 3.0
4. a Better browser (Or a lighter wheight one which loads faster.) Like K-Meleon Browser, would be an excellent Idea.
5, Please there has to be a new version of skype around somewhere for linux??? Using this dated version is such a drag.
6. Offline G-Mail access.
7. A Funky new UI (Keep the green thing, it’s uniquely you.)
8.A easier to use Dock. As the original dock I used in gOS 2.0 was deleted I made a new shelf and Put an iBar on it with scrolling. Was much better then the annoyingly slow AWM Dock.
9. A better splash screen. People get scared when they See white text on black backgrounds when there PC turns on. Multiple Times I’ve accidentally pressed a button and it has not booted at all.
10. Better Power Meter.
11. Why not base it on FaceBook – Google and MySpace have their own so why not FaceBook?
12. Keep the Media Center thing. Love being able to listen to what I want when I want for free.

Updates arent much of an issue to me. Sure 8.04 would be good but it’s not that urgent.

When I updated my download this morning I didnt even think about getting a new Distro, just after installing this gOS Space thing.

And yes a guide would be great!

Kudos to the gOS team your doing a great job.

One area of gOS space that really needs improvement is the GDM splash. Its doesn’t match the rest of the space theme, and the whitish gray with a black line in the middle looks cheap. How about a nice blue GDM splash that would flow into the already nice log in splash screen ?

gOS seems to be great and it’s so nice to see something that’s clean and more user friendly, available for you, if you want to put linux on your machine. A couple of suggestions:

- make the iso fit on a cd – you can always add programs easily at a later date: you could provide a list of recommended ones.

- love the mac-like interface. Keep trying to make it simple, uncluttered and functional.

- Get some good, (not resource intensive) strong drop shadows on windows.

- Keep going in a more ‘document-centric’ direction. Would love to see application menu bar in a panel at the top of the screen.

- keep it quite lightweight and capable of being run on old-ish hardware.

- introduce something similar to apple’s expose in order to switch windows more painlessly:shortcut key? mouse gesture?

Keep going with the good work, and I look forward to using the next generation gOS.

I’d like a version that can be put on a USB drive (stick) that is persistent and can launch both from the stick when put into a usb port or when you reboot the machine…I know don’t ask for much now will I haha. My thinking is that then people can carry there own things around, I have an 8 gig stick so I can do all my “stuff” on that then take it home and achieve at will but some place don’t want you restarting their machines to get your pen drive to work the way you want it so I’m thinking having both, if possible, shows that Linux is truly the operating system for the people as it won’t upset them when used…..I hope I’m making sense here.

I hear you, 4gb isn’t much not days, except when you try to down load it on a 1mb ADSL line, that would take a very long time, 2 days I’d think. An “everything install” disk would be a nice feature, but something that fits on a cd with the ability to download additional machine specific packages either during install or post install would be better for many of us. Again, I think your idea is good, but it should be on the menu, not the menu if you know what I mean.
