Known issue with system updates
Dave posted this on May 7 in the Support categoryWe’ve found that running a system update to Ubuntu 8.04 will break gOS Space and Rocket.
This is our bad and we apologize for not anticipating this well. Our next version will provide a different means of update and make sure we always have a stable, working base.
Thanks!
Dave

Dave thanks for relpying to my email.. i’ve just reinstalled gOS Space and I’m good. Hurry up on 8.04 dude.
Just another reason I like gOS the best, a crack team on top of issues as they rise. Can’t wait for the next release.
Wonderfull Job, I’m using it and I think you did a really good job. I’m in a hurry to test 8.04 based Gos, G os is really Gooooood
This has been a major pain. I still don’t have my Cloudbook working. I’m lucky that I didn’t have any files on it yet. Have you thought about selling affordable bootable flash drives so that users(mostly Cloudbook) could easily recover their computers? OR offer a download to put on our own flash drive. I don’t have an external DVD drive. Don’t even bring up Everex customer service. Thank you for the apology. I hope to see progress soon.
Hi J, I believe I can help you with that.
Follow these instruction (I know they’re for Ubuntu 8.04, but it works for gOS Space 2.0. I tested it):
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2008/04/09/usb-ubuntu-804-installation-from-windows/
If you have any questions, post them here I’ll help you create a bootable pendrive.
I don’t know how enthused the folks at gOS will be, but I was able to sneak away most of the theming elements of gOS Space and put them onto my installation of Ubuntu 8.04. If you want theme your Ubuntu 8.04 with the slick stylings of gOS, check out my Blog entry … http://steveballantyne.blogspot.com/2008/05/dress-up-ubuntu-804-hardy-to-look-like.html
On a side note, I failed miserably when updating from Ubuntu gutsy to Ubuntu heron. There are a ton of folks in the Ubuntu forums having the same luck – so I understand why the gOS folks are treading cautiously.
Nam,
Do these instructions work with Cloudbook? If so, I will need your help. I have no idea how to get this working. I have tried installing gOS many times(I have taken the ISO from this site and Everex’s site) and Ubuntu a few times(with the directions on the site you listed – I get a purple screen). No luck.
Thanks.
I don’t think I wanna use gOS anymore… unless it’s based on Ubuntu 8.04, which includes drastic improvements over 7.10.
However, I plan on using Linux this summer, so if you guys convert the base to 8.04, I might still use gOS…
-Just some thoughts from a to-be Linux user(who is 13, no seriously, I am 13)
I have given up on installing gOS to my Cloudbook. I can’t get it to work. I am sending it to Everex and they can deal with it. gOS, please make a stable and EASY to install OS. Everyone can’t be a Linux programmer.
It took you 8 days to work this out? I was able to work this out within a day., Thankfully I did not buy a PC with gOS installed – I’ve got it on an old laptop to ‘play’ with and I was appalled at what happened when I attempted to upgrade to 8.04 – no kernell! I suggest you fix this, not apologise.
Hey dude…
The new gOS came with OpenOffice 3.0 ?
Thanks…
I totally agree with J… not everyone who uses Linux, or wants to use Linux, are programmers. So please, take that into consideration when upgrading gOS.
And by the way, thank you very much Nam, the pendrivelinux thing is very useful if my XP (SP2) doesn’t boot!
I strongly urge you to NOT base gOS off of Hardy as this distro can not even be considered Final.
The included Kernel has too many Bugs and refuses to load on a lot of systems… including mine (BusyBox Prompt and stuff like that).
OK, wanna know why updates for Ubuntu 8.04 are not working ?? BECAUSE, g-OS is still running on 7.10 !!! how did I find that out ??
WELL, I posted something to a Usenet forum about this OS… then when updates were failing I decided to check the source for that message… and sure enough it said that I was posting from Ubuntu 7.10.
X-HTTP-UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11)
Gecko/20071204 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.11,gzip(gfe),gzip(gfe)
Ran the updates for that version and no problems… even installed CNR for 7.10 and am now downloading programs to improve my computer.
How about telling the truth about your OS ?? why lie to people and tell them that you are running on 8.04 when in fact you are still running on 7.10 ??
Don’t get me wrong the OS is awesome and I will be recommending it to a lot of people… but please people, tell the truth.
William, i don’t get what you’re trying to say. Nobody is lying, gOS does have problem upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04. Who are you referring as a liar specifically?
Hey William where on this site does it say that gOS runs and or upgrades to 8.04?
Yah
nowhere on this site it claims that gOS is built ontop a base of Ubuntu 8.04 or can be upgraded to it.
No one here is lying, so i suggest you READ what is written here with OPENED eyes… smh
Hey William,
Sorry about your impression of us, but we’ve been pretty open about not being based on 8.04 just yet. We are however working on it…
Thanks everyone who has helped confirm this important detail…
…in no way are we trying to be non-transparent about what we release. Transparent code, transparent products!
Best,
Dave
Well I’m by no means a programmer of any measure! But I’ve been told of this gOS by a good friend. I’ve got an old laptop and will try this gOS on it first. If it’s what I’ve been looking for, I’ll be the first to tell everyone that has Windows Vista, (please excuse the French), about it. My daughter’s computer will come next. Poor girl’s having a time making her puter work, and I’ve got the same problems as well. They won’t even let me back step and reload my XP Pro!?
What the heck!! If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to let me know of them, or direct me to the site that has them posted.
Thank you again
Gil
Yo Dave, by the time you release your new Version of gOS, will the repos work again and will you release a patch of sorts to make an update to the new Relase work as intended ?
I used vmware to install GOS,but I find iBar,why.Can I use eclipse,freemind,visual paradigm under GOS 3.0.
Maybe the next Gos should be based off Gentoo. I like G os but I do not like Fedora.
What does Fedora have to do with gOS?Im sorry,is it just me or do people just come in here to post comments that have nothing to do with anything?
GOS developers. Please ignore the stuff others say about basing gos on this or that distro. Your selection to be based on ubuntu which uses synaptic based on the debian repositories. Also the efficient Enlightmentment with options for KDE and Gnome is a brilliant idea and you actually put the whole thing together to make what I think is one of the best distros I have ever seen and used.
Keep up the great work.
Regards,
Khawar
gOS is real easy on my eye and my resources. Your take on Enlightenment whilst giving it MacOS look a run for its money deserves a huge credit.
I still can’t dig why you coupled it with MySpace though.
As for 8.04 issues, well I skip it and just go for maintenance updates.
Keep working on it guys. Great work by far
Be careful mates with update to 8.04. I’m testing the 8.04 now and I can see different problems all over different forums. As for me before the updtae, my wireless card was not detected nor my graphic card whereas they were on 7.10. I hope You could fix these problems. I do like gOS it rocks
Hi Dave, how’s it going? We haven’t seen much update on your blog. How’s the progress with gOS 3.0?
I was really excited about using gOS. Unfortunately I am not able to load gOS on my partition. Every attempt I get an error something to do with my monitor. I got the same error with Fedora core (6). I am running a 64 AMD processor. I hope that wont be the issue. If so please let us know when an x86-64 version is available.
Kindest Regards,
A-User
Hi, there any problem with the gOS repositories?
Thanks.
hey guys im the first linux user in my country .im from dubai,u.a.e
im the only one in this country thats using gos space.
ilove it keep up the good work cant wait for version 8
,qussaii al hashemi
I shall definitely not hit the button to upgrade to 8.04!
But a more major concern is that I can not get any updates, or update Synaptic (just installed gOS, and want to download a few useful things). Is your web server still down? I see your home page works, but not the start page on Firefox….?
Update to Heron worked fine for me though difficult focusses (Bluetooth, UMTS,Webcam, customkernel) and Hardware. Please be cautious with the old and outdated repos of 7.10!
CV – problems!
gOS Desktop portage test to Hardy went well.
gOs Update went well, too – but had some Handwork to do .
BUT : It`s not simple for Linux/Unix newbies and ends up in frustration if you arent aware of what to do and where to look for debug.
Nice OS!
For Linux Newbies :
Be patient and wait for Update certified by this Distro!
If we shouldn’t upgrade to Hardy at the moment, does that mean that we need to stay off OpenOffice 2.4 too? The 3D transition in the new version of Impress is very tempting. :-)
I too had catastrophic issues with hardy
but, in balance I can’t get proper ubuntu to load to a gui with several machines available. the best I have done is a lamp server on 7.04
I have ran a few other distros as well, but this has so far been my best linux experience. I’ve managed to do most things I want to do, and I don’t code for smallNsoft or linux
Right now, I’m running 8.04 with the Mac4Lin project and it not only looks fine, but it runs fine as well.
Booting takes about 1.5 to 2 full minutes. But, what else can you expect?
I have an Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz.
Any news from gOS staff? I’ve been running Ubuntu 8.04 for 2 weeks now and after an upgrade it worked fine.
As for gOS I thought about the custom menu. It would be nice to make a multilanguage one and a nice web looking such as the top menu from this site to change from gnome interface.
The major issue I found out from my PC when updating to 8.04, is that boot files from the previous version are deleted, but the boot files for the new one are not copied to the /boot, which causes the computer to start memtest ONLY when I turn my pc on, as it´s the only thing in /boot that remained…
Hey im thinking on installing this but what about drivers? 8800 gtx? supported?
The exact same thing happened to me too Anderson…

Please give us some news ^^
Here’s my problem – my low power laptops do not have DVD drives – it would be great if you could break the install up into two CDs.
Thanks,
Bar
@Sasha
Yes, after installing gOS just goto System > Admin > Restricted Drivers and install the nVidia driver from there.
@Mark
If OpenOffice 2.4 is available in the 7.10 repos then you can install that.
Can gOS connect to the internet via a Belkin High-Speed Wireless G Desktop Network Card that has 802.11g and the module number is F5D7001? I’ve has alot of trouble with the internet on the other Linux distros that I’ve tried…
Thanks!

Any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance
When I run the update for 8.04 LTS, I don’t have my boot menu any more. All it does is never ending memory tests. Any ideas? Thanks in Advance.
@Rob
It’s the main issue with the update, for the moment the initrd and the vmlinuz paths are not written in the grub menu.lst when you update gOS to 8.04. I’m not even sure they are created in /usr/src since I did not check when I tried to update.
As for the sources I had the same problems. The sources are unavailable.
MAKE G-OS LOOK LIKE MAC OS X LEOPARD!!!
gOS is beautiful and with a lot of menu configuration it’s usable. My complaint is that the beautiful os x-like dock is almost completely useless without a complete overhaul. Most of that can be moved into Firefox’s Bookmarks. Real applications are more important there.
To Brad,
Well you can always edit the layout of the dock and fill it with your apps via the Preferences.
Cheers
Start with gOS -> Places -> Applications -> and start dragging and dropping the applications that you need to the awn, and right click -> remove the applications that you dont need. Its as simple as that
i have used gos before and many other linux distros and this is on my top 3 list. im 11 (13 year old kid eat it)
